Cross-Straits ties will only be improved when the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) returns to the right track of the 1992 Consensus and stops provoking the
Chinese mainland by seeking "independence," said the spokesperson of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, when asked to comment on whether the US election result will affect cross-Straits relations.

Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson of the office, said at a Wednesday briefing that the DPP's refusal to acknowledge the 1992 Consensus which embodies the one-China principle, its disruption of cross-Straits cooperation and exchanges, its slew of actions seeking "independence," and its provocation by colluding with foreign forces are the main reason for the current strain in cross-Straits ties.

Zhu's comments came after some voices from the island of Taiwan said that the US election provides an opportunity for the island and Chinese mainland to seek reconciliation and go back to the right track.

"The Taiwan question is China's internal affair, and no external interference is allowed. The motherland must be reunified, which is the historical conclusion of the development of cross-Straits relations," Zhu said.

She also slammed Taiwan regional leader Tsai Ing-wen's swift change of attitude in flattering US president-elect Joe Biden despite the fact she and some people in Taiwan had previously bet on President Donald Trump

"Taiwan is part of China… we strongly oppose any official connection between the island and relevant countries," said Zhu.
