A remake of Chinese theatrical master Cao Yu's stage play Thunderstorm will debut in Haikou, capital of South China's
Hainan Province, in December.

One of the most popular Chinese works of drama, Thunderstorm has been adapted into various forms including a Peking Opera, a ballet and a TV drama over the decades since it was first completed in 1933.

The upcoming adaptation, Post-Thunderstorm, will be directed by French theater director Eric Lacascade, who said he hopes his version will cover Cao's original play and the spin-off version by Cao's daughter Wan Fang.

In the director's eyes, the show will act as a dialogue between Cao and Wan, as well as one between him and Chinese audiences.

Wang Keran, artistic director of the show's production company Magnificent Culture, said that the innovative play also aims to pay tribute to Cao, a pioneering figure of Chinese theater, in 2020 - the 110th anniversary of his birth.

"The play is an adventure and a creative move as well. The director hopes to attract more Chinese audiences with an international approach," Wang explained.

After Haikou, the production will tour to Tianjin, Beijing and Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province.
